Hanley Health and Wellbeing Centre, 69/71 Stafford Street, Hanley, S-o-T, ST1 1LW Tel No: 0300 123 6759

Antibiotics

Antibiotics cannot be requested routinely. If you feel you need them you will need to discuss it with a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner.

Missed Appointments

Due to the high number of appointments that are booked and not attended, the current wait to see your preferred doctor may be between 2 and 3 weeks.
In October 100 patients, in November 99 patients and in December 128 patients failed to attend pre-booked appointments. If these appointments were cancelled rather than unattended, we would be able to offer them to other patients. It is therefore extremely important that you let the practice know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend, so that the appointment can be offered to someone else.  If a patient fails to attend pre-booked appointments on a number of occasions they may be removed from the practice list.

Coughs, Colds and Sore Throats

These minor illnesses are usually caused by the ubiquitous ‘virus’ and therefore antibiotics are not of any help in their treatment. Home treatment should consist of rest, plenty of drinks and recommended doses of paracetamol (Calpol or Disprol for children), until the body’s immune system clears the infection naturally. If a cough is accompanied by coloured or bloodstained sputum (phlegm), pains in the chest, or any difficulty in breathing, then your Doctor should be consulted.

Swine Flu Vaccinations

The Department of Health has ordered enough vaccines for the whole population, and in time it will be offered to everyone. The most vulnerable to serious illness from swine flu are being offered the vaccine first:-
  • Patients aged 6 months and over who have any of the following:
    • Chronic respiratory disease (must have used a steroid inhaler in the last 6 months)
    • Chronic heart disease
    • Chronic kidney disease
    • Chronic liver disease
    • Chronic neurological disease
    • Diabetes
    • Weakened immune system
  • All pregnant women
  • All Children aged 6 months to 5 years
  • Household contact of someone who is immunocompromised
  • Frontline health or social care worker

We have specific clinics set up for administering the vaccines. All patients who are eligible for a swine flu vaccination will receive an invitation letter, please contact the surgery on 01538 398658 once you have received this and we will be able to offer you an appointment.

If you have a cold or are on antibiotics please contact the surgery on 01538 381072 to re-arrange your appointment.

Prescriptions

The prescription line is now open from 2pm daily, this is to enable the receptionists to deal with the high volume of calls in a morning for patients wanting to book an appointment.
We are able to accept repeat re-order slips, or any requests written on paper as long as it has the patients name, address and/or date-of-birth and the items required, these can be posted to the surgery, put through the letterbox or in the red box just in through the front doors of the Health Centre.
We are unable to deal with prescription requests in less than 2 full working days so please allow plenty of time when re        questing you medication. This is because some prescriptions cannot be generated by our receptionists ready to be signed by the Doctor. This is due to the Doctor needing to review patients medication on a regular basis.

Please note prescriptions may not be available to collect when expected as the Doctor may want to review the patient before issuing the medication. Our receptionists will be able to advise you if this is the case when you contact the surgery.

Monthly prescriptions requested via pharmacy

If you get you regular medication on a monthly basis through the pharmacy please ensure that you inform the chemist each month exactly what items you require, failing to do this will may result in you receiving items you do not need.

Travel Vaccines

Patients who require vaccinations for travelling abroad will be asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to reception prior to their appointment, this will enable the Practice Nurse to obtain all the information that is required.

Patient & Public Involvement

The Practice would like to invite patients of Leek Health Centre to join our Patient Participation Group (PPG). The aims and objectives of a PPG are:
  • To give patients and health professionals the opportunity to meet to discuss topics of mutual interest
  • Opportunity for patients to make positive suggestions about the Practice and their own health care
  • Encourage health education activities
  • Develop self help projects to meet the needs of fellow patients
  • Act as representatives to attempt to influence the provisions of health and social care
  • Fund raising
Membership of the group would be voluntary and involve organising and attending regular meetings (meeting room to be supplied by the Practice).  The PPG will provide important feedback to the Practice, encourage networking with other local service providers and engage health care professionals by invitation to the meetings.  If you are interested in setting up and being involved with a patient led participation group and are registered as a patient at Leek Health Centre, please contact (in writing):  Mrs Nicky Farrow, Office Manager, Leek Health Centre, Fountain Street, Leek, Staffs, ST13 6JB
