Staff News
After 29 years of service, Sister Lynne Stubbs will be retiring from the practice on the 31st of July 2010. We wish her all the best in her retirement.
Dr Chikari will be leaving us to move on to her next placement on the 2nd of August, we wish her well for the future. Dr Durber will be returning to the practice for a 12 month period in 3rd of August.
Since Dr Lee’s retirement, Dr Robinson has taken over the service of the Freezing clinic. This is now held on a Wednesday evening.
The Health Centre has tried to provide as many services as possible to its patients including steroid injections to joints, which Dr Scriven and Dr Lee used to perform before their retirement. Plans are in place for Dr Robinson and Dr Balliu to attend a course in September, so that we can continue to offer this service for our patients.
On the Day Appointments
If you require an emergency on the day appointment then it is advisable that you ring the surgery as early as possible to receive a morning appointment with a Nurse Practitioner, the receptionist will offer you the next available appointment, should you not be able to attend then the receptionist will make you aware of other choices available.
Nurse Practitioner Service
Urgent or same day appointments are available with our Nurse Practitioners, at Leek Health Centre our Nurse Practitioners are Sister Beth Harvey and Sister Deborah Deavall.
Both of our Nurse Practitioners are experienced nurses who are fully qualified and trained in the assessment, diagnosis and prescribing for minor and acute illnesses.
By providing more Nurse Practitioner appointments it will free up much needed time for routine Doctor appointments.
What is a minor illness?
This is usually a new problem which has recently occurred:
- Chesty coughs
- Sore throats
- Headaches
- Aches and pains
- Itches and rashes
- Urine problems
If you have a suspected water infection, this can be investigated and if necessary treated without an appointment. You will need to present a sample of urine in a sterile container (if possible a red top urine bottle from reception) and complete a questionnaire to help the nurse/doctor to evaluate your symptoms. If appropriate treatment can be started within 24 hours.
Using your local Pharmacy
The Pharmacy can offer a wide range of treatments for minor conditions such as:-
Treatments over the counter can be very effective and cheaper than a prescription charge.
Prescription Charges
The current prescription charge is £7.20 per item, there is a prepayment scheme that can be accessed by all that pay for prescriptions where you can have a prepayment certificate for a charge of £28.25 for 3 months or £104.00 for 12 months. This can often provide savings for patients who require several items every month. For further information you can make enquiries at your local pharmacy or call the Prescription Pricing Authority on 0845 850 0030.
Prescription Ordering
If you require medications whilst you are away on holiday and need to order early, please let the receptionists know as this can be taken into account due to the early ordering of items, as this may result in your medication not being issued.
Please remember that the practice requires 48 working hours for prescriptions to be processed.
Extended Access
As part of the Department of Health’s Extended Access programme, we will continue to offer a limited number of routine, pre bookable appointments with GPs on Wednesday between 6.00 and 8.00pm?. We aim to have 2 Doctors in surgery during these times each week. It is hoped these appointments most benefit patients who work during the day or those who rely on transport from people who work.
In order that the Doctors can concentrate on these pre-booked appointments they will not be available in these late evening sessions for emergencies or other enquiries. Any urgent requests for medical attention will be passed to the PCT Out of Hours service after 6.00pm in the usual way.
Patient & Public Involvement
The Practice would like to establish a Patient Participation Group (PPG). The aims and objectives of a PPG are:
Membership of the group would be voluntary and involve organising and attending regular meetings (meeting room to be supplied by the Practice).
The PPG will provide important feedback to the Practice, encourage networking with other local service providers and engage health care professionals by invitation to the meetings.
If you are interested in setting up and being involved with a patient led participation group and are registered as a patient at Leek Health Centre, please contact (in writing):
